WHAT HAPPENED?
Per various reports, Arsenal have a deal in place for the 26-year-old, with only an announcement left. The player has verbally agreed on personal terms with the Gunners, who are set to trigger his €60 million (£51m/$68m) release clause.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
In January, it was reported that the Gunners were in advanced talks with Real Sociedad over sealing a transfer for Zubimendi in the summer. However, in March, fresh reports emerged that Real Madrid had joined the transfer race, along with long-term admirers Barcelona.
